Members of the United Fresh Produce Association will have a lot on their plates this week, as they make visits to Capitol Hill. The association opposes any changes to school lunch rules that would waive requirements for fresh fruit and vegetables or allow canned and frozen instead.
Congress won't meet the Sept. 30 deadline to reauthorize the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, so current rules will remain in effect for now. About 500 people are expected to attend the Washington Conference. They'll hear from two Senate Agriculture Committee members during the general session Wednesday, Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.).
The American Planning Association is in its second day of training and policy sessions on transportation, water, affordable housing and other topics today. Planners' Day on Capitol Hill is Tuesday.
The American Geosciences Institute, a network of 51 societies, is coordinating the eighth annual Geosciences Congressional Visits Day. A reception and exhibition is planned for Tuesday at the Rayburn House Office Building, with Hill visits Wednesday.
Also holding fly-ins and legislative conferences this week: The American Occupational Therapy Association, American Academy of Dermatology Association, the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and the International Franchise Association.
